Como is located at the northern end of South Park, the town is a historic mining settlement founded during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush in 1859. It sits approximately one-half mile north of Highway 285, approximately 8.5 miles northeast of Fairplay. Turning off the Highway onto County Road 50 leading northwest you can go through Como and over Boreas Pass (to Breckenridge) in Summit County. The mountains northwest of town form a dramatic background to the town site, which sits at the base of Little Baldy Mountain. The town was named by prospectors and miners from Como, Italy who came to work the gold fields of the area, there is also a little pond next to the highway called Lake Como.

Although there are many versions of this story this is the most common that many agree upon.
In a little town called Buckskin Joe’s there was a dance hall girl by the name of Silver Heels. She had arrived there in 1861 and lived in a small cabin that lay across the creek from town.

The presence of salt springs in South Park was known for centuries before the Tabor party “discovered” them. Indians had long taken salt from the springs. The Spanish called the South Park “Valle Salado” which means Salt Valley. French trappers called it “Bayou Salade,” Salt Marsh, and American settlers corrupted this to “Bayou Salado,” the name of the definitive history of South Park.
